Roulette Lessons

Roulette isn't rocket science, which explains why beginners and recreational casino gamblers tend to be drawn to the roulette table. You have the roulette wheel, that ever so familiar sight in casinos that makes roulette, along with blackjack, one of the most recognizable casino table games.

Roulette Rules for Inside Bets

Inside bets comprise wagers placed on a particular number or combination of numbers, either within or along the border of the numerical layout of the roulette wheel. Here are the types of inside bets:

Straight-up Bet. The simplest type of inside bet, it is a wager placed on any specific one of the 37 numbers on the roulette table. To do so, simply put your chips down on that number. RouletteA straight-up bet offers a chance to win back at 35:1.

Split Bet. It is a single wager placed on two different numbers, provided those numbers lie beside each other on the roulette layout. To do so, simply place your chips on the line between the two numbers. A split bet has a payoff of 17:1 with either number coming up.

Street Bet. On the same vein as a split bet, it is a single wager made on three adjoining numbers based on the layout. To do so, put your chips on the outside line of a row of three numbers. For example, to wager on 1, 2, and 3 all at once, position your chips on the outside edge of the number 3. A street bet pays 11:1.

Corner Bet. Otherwise known as a "square bet", it is a single wager made on four adjoining numbers based on the roulette layout. To do so, as the name suggests, place your chips at a corner where four numbers meet. A corner or square bet has a payoff of 8:1.

Square Bet. Specifically, it is a wager placed on the numbers 0, 1, 2, or 3, done by putting your chips down at the intersection of 0 and 3 on the corner. With a straight bet, you are paid 8:1.

How to Place an Inside Bet
When making inside bets, their cumulative amount (all of your bets added together) must total the table minimum. For example, at a roulette table with a $5 minimum, you can wager $1 on each of five specific numbers, or $5 on a single number, or any combination in between, as long as your wager amounts to at least $5.

Roulette Rules for Outside Bets

Outside bets comprise wagers that fall outside of the numerical layout made up of 37 numbers—in other words, more betting options beyond just wagering on a paticular number or combination of numbers. Note that it is not possible to win an outside bet if the outcome is 0. Here are the types of outside bets:

Red / Black Bet. One of the two simplest types of outside bet, it is a wager on either a red pocket number or black pocket number. To do so, put your chips right in any of the red- or black-colored diamond areas, which are located on the front of the layout. A red / black bet pays even money.

Odd / Even Bet. The other of the two simplest outside bets, it is a wager on either an odd or even number on the layout. Zero is neither an odd or even number, so the available numbers on which to wager total 36, an even count, and not 37. To do so, simply place your chips in the middle of the square area marked "even" or marked "odd", which are located on either side of the red / black betting area. An odd / even bet is paid even money.

Low / High Bet. It is a wager on a specific range of numbers, either from 1 to 18 or from 19 to 36. To do so, put your chips in the boxes marked with your chosen number range. A low / high bet has an even money payoff.

Column Bet. It is a wager on a specific column of numbers that appears on the roulette layout. There are two columns, marked "1" and "2", located at one end of the set of 37 numbers; and if your eye follows the line up the inside betting area, you would see which numbers fall within either column. To do so, place your chips on one of the two columns. You win if the ball lands on any number from within your chosen column. A column bet pays 2:1.

Dozen Bet. It is a wager on any of the three dozen-set of numbers out of 36: the first dozen numbers are 1 to 12, the second dozen numbers are 13 to 24, and the third dozen numbers are 25 to 36. To do so, put your chips down in one of the rectangular areas marked "1st 12," "2nd 12", and "3rd 12", which are located in between the outside betting area and the inside spread. A dozen bet is paid 2:1.

How to Place an Outside Bet
Each and every outside bet must equal at least the table minimum. Unlike inside bets, combining several outside bets to reach the table minimum is not allowed. For example, at a roulette table with a $5 minimum, if you want to bet on black and also on odds, you must place $5 on each of those two bets. Additionally, you are not allowed to add the value of outside bets to inside bets in order to reach a total.
